30 JUL 2018—Employees and executives from all branches of PNTC Colleges attended the company-organized lecture on data privacy held last July 27 at the Maritime Training Center in Intramuros, Manila.

Facilitated by resource speaker Atty. Cyril G. Arnesto, Associate General Counsel of Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc., the lecture provided an overview of Republic Act 10173, also known as the Data Privacy Act (DPA) of 2012, including its technical aspects and its implications for private companies and individuals.

A question and answer segment followed the lecture, during which the law’s applications in the organizational context—particularly in departments that handle personal information provided by the company’s clients—were explained to employees by the resource speaker and the executives present.

Passed in 2012 and effected in 2016, the DPA provides that individuals be protected from unlawful use of personal information as part of their universal right to liberty. The law further requires the compliance of organizations with access to a significant number of people’s information, and holds them accountable for the use and protection of such people’s data.
